Another Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek Receives PPP Innovation Award

Prize to Krefeld Rhine Harbor

On the evening of May 27, 2009 in Berlin, the PPP Federal Association and Behörden Spiegel honored the harbor project of the City of Krefeld with the PPP Innovation Award in the Infrastructure category. Last night, the award was presented to City Treasurer Abrahams and to the Manager of Neuss-Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH, Gross, during the administrative convention Efficient State.

Dr. Ute Jasper, attorney and Partner at Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek, had provided legal support throughout the project together with attorney Dr. Hans Arnold: "We are very pleased that this year another one of our projects received an award," she commented the ceremony while attending the event. This has already been the second award for the harbor project. In 2008, it received a prize in the ideas competition of NRW.Bank.

Since 2008, Krefeld harbor has no longer been city-owned and operated, but managed in a public private company with city-owned and private partners. The City of Krefeld implemented an institutionalized PPP project. It initially changed the harbor's legal form into a GmbH & Co. KG and subsequently had Neuss-Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH & Co. KG join as private partner. Neuss-Düsseldorfer won the competition of investors. Its offer convinced through the acceptance of future losses and sustainable promotion of the Krefeld business location.

The addition of the private partner brought the Krefeld harbor initial success last year. It was able to acquire a steel service center of Thyssen-Krupp as new harbor client, creating numerous jobs at the harbor. The previously shut down container terminal was reopened as well and is operating again. In addition, the company built a new container crane. Further projects are scheduled.

The "Public Sector" department by Dr. Jasper, has seen its projects receiving awards numerous times already. In 2007, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie received the PPP Innovation Award. In NRW.Bank's ideas competition in 2008, the road project of Lippe district was awarded a prize in addition to the partial privatization of Krefeld harbor.
