RhineCleanUp: Heuking clears the Rhine of 485 kilograms of trash

Equipped with clean-up tongs and wearing gloves and green vests, members of the Düsseldorf and Cologne offices of the law firm met up on Saturday to clear the banks of the Rhine River of trash. The initiative was entitled “Heuking is cleaning up!” and some 50 volunteers from the law firm collected any type of trash they could find on the riverbanks: from cigarette butts to plastic bottles to old cell phones. In the end, 485 kilograms of trash was collected.

Enjoying bright sunshine and the exchange between the Heuking teams, collecting plastic and other trash was an especially fun activity. To make the initiative even more exciting, Heuking held a challenge between the two cities on the Rhine: Which team would collect more waste? At the end of the clean-up day, all of the motivated waste collectors weighed their garbage bags. At 297 kilograms of trash versus 188 kilograms, the Düsseldorf team came out on top.

Almost 450 groups had registered for the fourth annual RhineCleanUp that was held on September 11. As in years prior, volunteers cleaned the banks of the Rhine from its source in Switzerland to its mouth near Rotterdam. In 2020, 35,000 volunteers had cleaned the banks of the Rhine, Moselle, and Ruhr rivers.
