HEUKING Advises the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm District on the Acquisition of St. Joseph Hospital Prüm Out of Insolvency
The Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district has taken a decisive step toward securing the future of St. Joseph Hospital in Prüm with the notarial execution of an investor agreement. A HEUKING team led by Frankfurt partner Christine Grau provided comprehensive legal counsel to the district throughout the transaction.
The investor agreement was entered into by St. Joseph-Krankenhaus gemeinnützige GmbH, the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district, and court-appointed administrator (Sachwalter) attorney Jakob Joeres. It establishes the contractual basis for the planned acquisition of the company by the district within the framework of the pending insolvency proceedings. St. Joseph Hospital is a primary care hospital with 150 licensed beds included in the Rhineland-Palatinate hospital plan and employs approximately 450 staff members.
The agreement is subject to approval by the district council (Kreistag) at its session on September 7, 2026. The economic transfer is scheduled for October 1, 2026. Through the acquisition, the Eifelkreis district is safeguarding local jobs and ensuring continued inpatient care in the region. A detailed business and financial plan is expected to be developed in fall 2026.
HEUKING has advised the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district since November 2025 on the complex acquisition process, covering state aid, public procurement, corporate, insolvency, administrative, employment, healthcare regulatory, construction, tax, and insurance law aspects of the transaction.
