REGIOBAHN’s S28 line now running all the way to Wuppertal

Starting with the train schedule change in the night from December 12 to 13, 2020, Regiobahn commenced operations on the extended rapid transit line S28, which now runs from Kaarst via Neuss, Düsseldorf, and Mettmann all the way to Wuppertal. Five stops were added to the train line.

In recent years, Regiobahn upgraded and extended the existing freight line from Mettmann Stadtwald to Dornap-Hahnenfurth to close the gap between Mettmann and Wuppertal. It rebuilt the Hahnenfurth / Düssel stop, equipping it with a park and ride parking lot and bicycle stands. Regiobahn also built a new electronic signal box to connect its signaling technology to the Deutsche Bahn network.

Regiobahn is investing some EUR 100 million in the project. About EUR 70 million of that total is coming from subsidies from the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In a next step, Regiobahn will electrify the route network so as to use electric trains in the future.

“Extending Regiobahn is a strong signal for local transport and climate protection – all the more so if the line will be electrified in the future,” Ute Jasper, Lawyer and Team Leader at Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek, was pleased to note. “Once all planning approval decisions are available, we will get started on the invitations to bid for the new overhead contact wires that Regiobahn needs for operation with electric trains,” added Kirstin van de Sande, Lawyer and responsible for public procurement law in the procedure.
